CCTV-1 “Pillars of a Great Nation” Season 2 | Hong Kong Team Develops 5G Elderly Care Robot to Tackle Aging Challenges with Smart Technology

[Hong Kong] In response to the global aging population, Hong Kong scientist Mark Mak (麦骞誉) and his team have developed a 5G bionic elderly care robot, recently featured on CCTV-1’s Pillars of a Great Nation (大国基石), showcasing how technology can reshape traditional elderly care models. The robot integrates remote operation and brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, enabling functions like assisted turning and massage, while also monitoring emotional states in real-time—offering a groundbreaking solution for the eldercare industry.

Tech Empowerment: From Pain Points to Breakthroughs

Mark Mak shared that his motivation came from missing his loved ones: “If technology can extend the quality of human life, it will be a major contribution to society.” The robot is equipped with a 5G system that allows therapists to remotely program and control the device, enabling one operator to serve multiple seniors simultaneously—boosting efficiency by 5 to 10 times. In the program, 68-year-old volunteer Cheng Guoxing tested the robot’s massage function, and his feedback data will be used to further refine its precision and comfort.

Greater Bay Area Synergy: Accelerating Industrial Implementation

China is already witnessing the large-scale development of elderly care robots, especially with rapid deployment across the Greater Bay Area, where these technologies are being integrated into both home- and institution-based care models. Shanghai’s Pudong district now hosts over 100 humanoid robotics companies, building high-quality datasets to support iterative R&D. Furthermore, China is taking the lead in formulating the world’s first international standard for eldercare robots, covering essential functions like daily assistance and health monitoring.

Looking Ahead: Advancing Technology with Ethics

Driven by supportive national policies, the eldercare robotics industry is entering a phase of explosive growth. The program emphasized that going forward, innovation must balance with sustainability, ensuring that technology remains “people-centered.” Mark Mak’s team confirmed they will continue optimizing the human-machine collaboration experience—making intelligent technology a true cornerstone in addressing population aging.

【Key Technological Features】

  • 5G Remote Operation: Overcomes spatial barriers, enabling precise care from a distance
  • BCI-Based Emotional Recognition: Detects and responds to seniors’ psychological states in real time
  • Modular Design: Customizable programs for rehabilitation tasks like turning and massage
